Ski Jacket Search - So Many Ski Jackets, So Little Time

A quality ski jacket is a must for anyone considering hitting the slopes or spending a significant amount of time in cold weather. You will find quite the variety of ski jackets on the market but do not let the variety of brands, styles and looks frustrate you.

Backcountry.com offers a nice selection of ski jackets at more reasonable prices. The lower prices do not reflect lower quality; I assure you that these ski jackets are top notch.

A ski jacket by North Face has come to be recognized as somewhat of a style icon on the slopes. North Face ski jackets do a lot more than look good. Their fleece ski jacket, such as the North Face Denali ski jacket is the one to have when youre in the ski base camps or just walking about the college campus.

A perfect addition to your ski jacket would be a quality base layer. Take a look at the North Face Apex Zip Shirt Jacket. This makes the perfect base layer underneath any ski jacket. This gives you a layered clothing approach. After you climb of off the slopes, you will find yourself to be a bit hot. You can drop the ski jacket and will still have your zip shirt in place to provide some protection from the elements.

Going to the extreme side of cold weather, a heavy down ski jacket is a necessity. I would have to recommend the Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero SL Hooded Ski Jacket. This jacket contains 650-fill which is ideal for the coldest of environments. This is the ski jacket you see those Antarctic explorers and scientists wearing on television. This ski jacket has a water-resistant but breathable fabric that makes it ideal for skiing.

Ski Jacket Tips

  • Layer your Ski Jackets (thin inner liner/ jacket, thick outer ski jacket)
  • Water-resistance is a must.
  • Find a Quality down filled Ski Jacket. 650-fill is plenty.
  • You cant go wrong with a brand name. They know what theyre doing.
  • Find a bright color You want skiers to see you coming.
  • Big Zippers are easy to manipulate with cold fingers and heavy gloves.

A ski jacket that is more of a personal preference of mine is the Cloudveil Inversion Down Jacket. This is a 650-fill down jacket that weighs in at only 14 ounces. What I like to do is stuff this thing into a detached stuff sack, which is included with this ski jacket. I then make my way up the lifts onto my slope of choice. Then I can put this Cloudveil ski jacket on and Im ready to break a new land speed record or every bone in my body, whichever way it goes for that day.

Well, these are just a few of my preferred ski jackets that Ive had any experience with at all. You will find a slew of opinions out there so dont let it overwhelm you. If you stick to some of the better ski jacket brands like North Face, Spyder, Marmot, Cloudveil, Backcountry.com, Mountain Hardwear and many others, youll be just fine. My only piece of advice on this, make sure that you purchase layers. You will want to reduce the bulk of your ski jacket after you finish a ski run or get the blood pressure going. Then later, I assure you, youll want to put that top layer ski jacket back on as youll begin to shiver.

Good luck in your ski jacket seeking endeavors.
